Create character using patterns, texture and colour

When artfully arranged, maximalist combinations of fabric and furnishings make for a unique and vibrant aesthetic.

Liverpool designer Laura Hall from @thehexagonalhouse creates stunningly eclectic colourful designs for her home. We love her use of colour combinations that aren’t afraid to boldly proclaim, “this is me!”.

For those keen to incorporate bold colour, a similar style can be achieved through choices of upholstery, curtains and cushions. Combining thrift store finds with the odd new and shiny lampshade or designer piece will help make this style a success, especially if you’re starting out with a unique, older home.

Here are a few of the main principles seen in Hall’s interiors along with advice on how to do it yourself.

Don’t be afraid of mixing-matching

If your home has an original visual feature that you love, such as a window seat, this can be matched with your curtains or brought out in your cushions. The match doesn’t have to be perfect either. “Slightly off” colour schemes can be far more interesting than trying to match them like you would a ball of wool. Play with the colour and follow your own heart!

Explore playful fabrics

Go for a theme, but don’t go too far.

It can be tempting to go all-in on a themed space, such as a child’s bedroom. If you’re using a feature fabric in a large area, like curtains or bedding, some complementary colours and rich textures that bring out the designs in the patterned fabric will help prevent the space from looking too busy while still retaining that sense of fun.

Explore rich, textured fabrics

Florals and stripes, oh my!

The Hexagonal House features are refreshing and entirely unexpected! The combinations of fabric patterns on the cushions and upholstery are a joy to behold. For a true eclectic and ambient look, mix and match your cushions using a stripe or a check alongside a floral or narrative-style patterned fabric. When arranged on a bold coloured and textured sofa, this will deliver that maximalist design quality. To avoid a clashing or mismatched look, look for a similar colour-ways between two fabrics.

Express yourself

Your home should make you happy. Just as Laura Hall has embraced her love of colour, if you have a favourite hobby or collection of items, put them on display and make them a feature of your home. An upcycled vintage display shelf can be an interesting way to show your favourite things off, creating a conversation piece that can be added to if (or perhaps when) your collection grows.
